The Argentine Foreign Ministry asks Russia to investigate the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny

The Argentine Foreign Ministry on Tuesday urged the authorities of the Russian Federation to carry out “an investigation that sheds light as soon as possible” on the death of the political leader of the Russian opposition Alexey Navalny.

“Regarding the clarification of the death of Alexey Navalny, political leader of the Russian opposition and promoter of democracy and human rights, the Argentine Government calls on the authorities of the Russian Federation to carry out an investigation that will reveal, as soon as possible, shed light on what happened,” expressed the Foreign Ministry, headed by Diana Mondina, through a press release issued today.

The Kremlin described as “baseless” accusations that President Vladimir Putin “killed” Alexey Navalny, who died last week in prison, in response to accusations by the opposition leader’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya.

“These are obviously broad and completely unfounded accusations against the head of the Russian state, but given that Yulia Navalnaya became a widow a few days ago, I will not comment,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov.

“It is nothing more than a baseless accusation, because it is unjustified and lacks evidence,” said the spokesperson, quoted by the AFP and Sputnik news agencies.

Navalny, convicted of embezzlement, fraud and founding a terrorist organization among other causes, died last Friday in a penitentiary center located in northwest Russia.

According to prison authorities, after a walk the inmate began to feel ill and fainted. Prison doctors immediately came to assist him, but he did not react.

The widow yesterday accused Putin of “killing” her husband and anticipated that the activist’s fight will continue.

“Three days ago, Vladimir Putin killed my husband, Alexey Navalny. Putin killed the father of my children,” said Yulia Navalnaya in a video published on social networks hours before meeting with the foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) in Brussels.

Meanwhile, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, said yesterday that his Government was “considering” applying new sanctions against Russia after the death of Navalny.

“We already have sanctions, but we are studying additional sanctions,” Biden responded to questions from journalists, days after pointing out Putin as “responsible” for the death of the Russian opponent.
