The Birth of China’s National Anthem: The Story Behind “March of the Volunteers”

The famous opera “March of the Volunteers”, jointly produced by the Shanghai Opera House and Shanghai Xuhui District Culture and Tourism Bureau, is making waves as it strives for excellence in every aspect, creating a new height for Shanghai-style national opera. The story of the opera vividly reenacts the creation of the Chinese national anthem and the historical events that led to its significance.

Originally, “March of the Volunteers” was the theme song for the 1935 film “Children of the Storm” produced by the Shanghai Dentsu Film Company. The song quickly gained popularity and became the anthem for the Anti-Japanese War. In 1949, it was designated as the national anthem of China and played at the founding ceremony on October 1. The song has withstood the test of time and is still popular today.

The opera, however, faced the challenge of detailing the birth of “March of the Volunteers” while also revealing the song’s deep connection to the city of Shanghai. The production focuses on six historical figures and their roles in the creation and spread of the song, effectively narrating the story from cause to effect and flowing smoothly from one event to the next.

Through the skillful handling of characters and relationships, the opera brings to life the creators of “March of the Volunteers” and their involvement in left-wing cultural movements. The stage design creates a dynamic atmosphere, with more than 20 scenes seamlessly transitioning to create a rich and immersive experience for the audience.

The music of the opera also pays homage to the era by incorporating representative songs from the left-wing cultural movement. The melody of “March of the Volunteers” becomes a leading motif, demonstrating its significance and growth throughout the performance.

Director Liao Xianghong expressed the hope that the opera would evoke strong emotions, triggering feelings of national pride and patriotic enthusiasm in the hearts of the audience.

“March of the Volunteers” not only brings this iconic war song to life on stage but also resonates with the audience, leaving a lasting impression in the hearts and minds of all who experience it.

The opera beautifully captures not only the historical significance of the national anthem but also the unwavering spirit of the Chinese people during times of national peril.
