Emergency Rooms In Como Overwhelmed by Patient Influx

Emergency rooms in Como were overwhelmed with patients over the weekend, leading to long waiting times and crowded conditions. Sant’Anna hospital alone had 68 patients, with a majority in code blue or code orange.

According to reports, Cantù Emergency Department, Valduce, and Erba hospital were also overcrowded with patients seeking treatment. Health officials attribute the influx to the usual lack of responses from local medicine during weekends, making it difficult for patients to consult family doctors or access emergency medical services.

One patient, Rosanna Talassi, shared her experience of spending over eleven hours in the Sant’Anna emergency room due to her husband’s renal colic. She praised the hardworking doctors and nurses but noted the long waits and the presence of individuals seeking unnecessary treatment.

The situation has highlighted the ongoing challenge of finding professionals to work in emergency rooms. Lariana Asst recently published a public notice seeking self-employed anesthetists and resuscitators to help alleviate the strain on hospitals. Despite hiring ten new specialists last month, the need for additional staff remains high.

As hospitals continue to struggle with staffing shortages, the public is reminded to use the emergency room only for urgent medical needs. The healthcare system is urging individuals to seek alternative options for non-emergency situations to help alleviate the burden on emergency services.
