A California doctor wants to set up a floating abortion clinic in the Gulf of Mexico. The platform would allow, according to the doctor who proposes it, to maintain the right to terminate pregnancy also to women residing in the Southern States of the United States, where abortion bans have been enacted following the recent sentence of the Supreme Court which overturned a previous decision of the judges that guaranteed the right to abortion at the federal level, that is, throughout the US territory.
The idea of circumventing the new bans with a floating clinic came to Dr. Meg Autry, a midwife, gynecologist and professor at the University of California at San Francisco. In addition to surgical abortions in the first three months of pregnancy, the water treatment center should also offer everything needed for contraception and other treatments.
“There has been an assault on reproductive rights in our country and I have been a lifelong advocate of reproductive health and choice,” Autry told the microphones of theAssociated Press. “We need to create options and be thoughtful and creative to help people in need get the health care they deserve,” added the doctor.
The gynecologist’s fears seem well founded. Abortion bans have already entered into force in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Even in Florida, legislation is now in place that prohibits abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, except that the surgery is necessary to save a life, prevent serious injury, or if the fetus has a fatal malformation.

Autry said the idea is already in the fundraising phase through the non-profit organization “Prrowess”, short for Protection of the Reproductive Rights of Women Threatened by state statutes. If implemented, the platform will offer “closer access and fast for some people, especially female workers living in the southernmost part of these states, ”Autry explained.
