Renowned Virologist Antonella Viola Faces Criticism Over Intermittent Fasting Recommendations

Italian virologist Antonella Viola, known for her prominent role during the pandemic, has recently come under fire for her recommendations on intermittent fasting. Viola, who authored a book titled “Intermittent Fasting – All the benefits of circadian nutrition,” promotes the theory that fasting during the night and eating during the day can provide health benefits.

However, Viola herself has admitted to struggling to adhere to her own strict guidelines, citing issues such as insomnia and stomach cramps when attempting to fast for prolonged periods. Her husband, on the other hand, follows the regimen faithfully, raising questions about the practicality and effectiveness of such diets.

A recent study presented by the American Heart Association has further fueled the controversy, suggesting that intermittent fasting could increase the risk of death from cardiovascular events. The study, which analyzed the eating habits of over 20,000 subjects, found a significant rise in the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes in individuals practicing fasting for extended hours.

While Viola has dismissed the study as lacking sufficient data and methodology, other experts, such as Giuseppe Remuzzi, director of the Mario Negri Pharmacological Research Institute, have raised concerns about the long-term effects of intermittent fasting. Remuzzi warns that while the practice may offer short-term benefits such as weight loss and improved metabolic functions, it could potentially harm individuals in the long run, especially those with existing health conditions.

As debates on the efficacy of intermittent fasting continue to unfold, it remains clear that maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet, alongside regular physical activity, is crucial for overall health and well-being. Whether Viola’s recommendations hold up to scrutiny or not, the quest for the elusive elixir of long life remains an ongoing pursuit in the realm of health and wellness.
