Apple Store employees want to create their own union, which would be the first in the United States: the idea started from the iconic store in Grand Central, New Yorkwhere workers have initiated a collection of signatures on this.
As usual, they must reach the threshold of 30% of employees to be able to organize a sort of referendum that will ask whether or not you are in favor of a union: “Grand Central is an extraordinary shop with unique working conditions that make it necessary to have a union to ensure our team the best living standards”, it is read on the site opened by the promoters of the initiative.
According to the Washington Post, which cited employees who asked for anonymity for fear of losing their jobs, workers in at least 3 other Apple stores in the USalso to ask for a minimum wage of $ 30 an hour (currently the lowest level is at 20) and an increase in benefits.

The idea is somehow the daughter of similar ideas that have concerned Starbucks and Amazon, and which for American companies are a bit of a novelty: after the formation of a union in two Starbucks coffee shops at the end of 2021, another 160 have applied, while also in New York the employees of a warehouse of Amazon they voted overwhelmingly in favor of forming a union just a few weeks ago.
Fruit Stand Workers United (that’s the name of the group that’s collecting signatures in Grand Central) has affiliated with Workers United, which also gathers workers from Starbucks coffee shops, itself affiliated with the larger Seiu union.
