An excellent mid-table: the test of the Motorola Edge 20 Pro

by admin

A quality phone, well made, that offers more than it costs, but is not revolutionary. What matters about this Motorola Edge 20 Pro is the relationship between quality and price: costs around 600 euros (but it is also found at an altitude of 500), however, it offers uppercase performance and quality, unlike some of the competition that is equally (if not cheaper), which however often takes a few shortcuts.

Sure, the Edge 20 Pro it can’t compete with a $ 1,500 flagship from Samsung or Apple, it is not foldable, it does not have a latest generation Oled screen, and also the processor is the Snapdragon 870 one already seen that it is of the medium-high range, but which seems to have almost eternal life from what is continuing to go well.

On its own, the Edge 20 puts one respectable 6.7-inch screen: Hdr10 + Oled Full Hd + with refresh rate that can reach 144 MHz (but normally is at 60, 90 and 120) in a light and streamlined body that contains a double physical sim, 4500 mAh battery and 108 megapixel camera triplet , with 50x stabilized digital SuperZoom. The test model is very nice, Midnight Blue color with top equipment: 12 Gb of Ram and 256 of memory. Above all, 5G connectivity and 30 Watt TurboPower charge with the included charger which in exactly 10 minutes puts 10 hours of autonomy of the 30 officers.

The road test
What we immediately liked about this phone, aside from the lightness and handling despite the important screen, is the minimalist approach. In the box there is one silicone cover transparent, which is perfect and has taken away the anxiety of looking for another one, the phone has an extremely light and simple launcher developed by Motorola that makes you remember phones with stock Android version, the fingerprint reader on the side does not disturb and it goes very well, as is the front camera embedded in the display, like a drop in a sea of pixels. Also 3 lenses (wide-angle to telephoto) they do not protrude that much and are perfectly flush with the standard cover. In short, this smartphone is minimalist and does what it takes.

In particular: the battery life is truly remarkable and keeps its promises. We changed the launcher (using the excellent Nova and then Niagara, which is the height of minimalism) and reorganized the services and preferences, but also flooded with widgets, if the Gps and 5G are managed wisely, the battery does not suffer. . Still: the matte finish makes this phone elegant and at the same time discreet, in the sense that it does not stand out like others of its size. We’ve only briefly tested Motorola’s developed mode with Qualcomm for use connected to a monitor and keyboard as a desktop computer, and we can’t tell if the workload of the Microsoft suite in particular is feeling, but in the android mode works well, albeit with some slight slowdown.

A strong point is the quality of the screen: more than the frequency (which must still be configured by hand for reach 144 MHz), it is the quality of the blacks and the yield in general that amaze. The 8mm thickness and borderless design make it very slim, while the quality of the screen looks great outdoors in the sun. Instead, the only stabilized camera is apparently the tele one and here the overall yield is no longer so much Edge: the name, as well as the Pro definition, goes a bit wide, also due to the rounded edges but above all the average processor and in general due to the limitation of some stock software. For example: the delay of the switch in taking pictures is sometimes really annoying.

What do we think
Overall, this is a great phone for the mid-range market that wants something more. It ideally follows the philosophy of the OnePlus of a few years ago: excellent quality at an affordable price. The level of finishes and materials is excellent, the ideal thickness and thus the weight (163 grams, it is the lightest of all phones above 6.6 inches), the choice of having a 2400 x 1080 pixel screen is traditionalist, but the addition of a third mode is excellent. 144 MHz, fast charging and the usability of stock apps is great. The sound quality is sufficient (low bass), unfortunately the performance of the photos and videos can be improved (despite Motorola’s visible commitment, there is still room for improvement on this side), but now selfies with the front camera have an excellent yield.

The good things
We have it on test shortly after its release (last August), to see if the battery continues to perform even after a long use and the processor holds up the updates of the apps and Android 11. The answer is positive: the phone goes like the first day. In particular, the battery offers a day and a half of autonomy, while standby is among the best, with ten or more days before it downloads. The software suite that accompanies Motorola’s minimalist launcher and the handling of notifications on the edges in particular, are very well done.

The less good things
The lack of a configuration a double micro-speaker in a premium phone like this it is disappointing. And then, of course, the audio jack is missing. Furthermore, Motorola promises two years of updates Android, but the competition (Samsung, Google, OnePlus) offers three. 5G radio has all frequencies except millimeter waves (not yet present in Italy). In short, on closer inspection the Edge 20 Pro is far from perfect.

Both the OnePlus 9 Pro and the Pixel 6 offer quality and price-performance ratio better, while in the price range there is a real invasion of devices (Samsung, Poco, Realme, among the most significant). However, the Motorola 20 Edge Pro follows a series of quality devices and it itself shows that it has a reliability, a level of finishes and an engineering that make it a desirable phone for those who do not want to spend over 550 euros and are interested in the highest quality.
