Is this the change now? Experts gave great tips on the health tour

Why are you suddenly so sad? Why do you sleep so badly? Why do you no longer feel comfortable in your body? At the OÖN health tour on Thursday, Primaria Gabriele Baumann summarized the topic of menopause at the Steyr Clinic. Experts met a hundred visitors with their questions and needs.

“It’s a social problem,” said gynecologist Barbara Gruber-Resch, encouraging people to talk more about the topic of menopause. After all, every woman is affected; complaints such as noticeable sweating, hot flashes, sleep disorders, psychological problems but also osteoporosis or problems with the joints are common.

Some of the recommendations for women in transition sound simple, but are not easy to implement consistently. Sports scientist and Uniqa vitality coach Barbara Schagerl-Müllner, for example, advocated two units of strength training per week in addition to 150 minutes of endurance exercise. Accepting the condition and having a positive attitude often improves the quality of life: “For example, you can consciously notice hot flashes and learn to deal with them. The sensations usually last no longer than 90 seconds.” According to dietician Martina Voglsam, you should include dairy products or other sources of calcium three times a day to protect your bones. “Vitamin D is particularly important. It works better for the psyche if it is taken daily and not once a week,” said doctor Gruber-Resch. If there is actually a deficiency, a mix of vitamin D and calcium makes sense.

Hormones can help

Primary Lukas Angleitner-Boubenizek from the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Klinikum Steyr warned against miracle cures: “You can’t back up everything that’s being sold with studies.” In addition to foods like tofu, which naturally contain estrogen-like substances, hormone replacement therapy is also an option for severe symptoms. This can be administered in tablet form or as an ointment. In the latter case, the cream is applied daily; the active ingredient penetrates through the skin and neither puts a strain on the liver nor promotes thrombosis. One insight from the evening: replacing hormones can be a very good solution – but an expert should definitely put together how much of which product is right for the person affected in consultation with the patient.

The topic of psyche also played an important role on the health tour. Gynecologist Gruber-Resch explained that it’s about balance in life. You are no longer as productive as you were when you were young, “but you are expected to perform.” Antidepressants can help not only with depression, which is typical in alternating periods: “They often also work when you feel lost when you don’t sleep well.”

Franz Harnoncourt, CEO of the Upper Austrian Health Holding, was pleased with the visitors’ interest: “Regional hospitals are places of expertise.” Uniqa regional manager Gerald Hintringer was also excited about the opportunity to “inspire people to live a healthy life.”
