Google released a preview version of the Android 12L operating system for large-screen devices such as tablets and foldable models in October last year. Today, Google announced a number of features in 12L, and will continue to roll out updates for Samsung, Lenovo and Microsoft devices this year.

Andrei Popescu, vice president of Android engineering, pointed out in an official blog post that the larger the device screen, the more space there is to display information. Google is optimizing the display of the Android 12L system’s home screen, screen lock, system notifications, device settings and other functional screens to present a more beautiful system screen on tablets and foldable devices.

Popiscu said Google has learned from user feedback that the most common reason for swiping down the notification shade is to check and clear system notifications. Android 12L provides its own dedicated fields for system notifications and quick function settings, so that there is more space to view and clear system notifications.

When setting up a new device, users can also browse more information in one go through the paging mode of Android 12L. Users will be able to modify functions in “Settings” without having to switch frequently between setting pages for each step.

Google is also adding a toolbar bar to Android 12L, allowing multitaskers to instantly launch and switch applications, or drag and drop any application from the taskbar and enter split-window mode, which is convenient for doing two things at once, such as Watch YouTube videos while reading the news.
