Bassetti, virologist at the San Martino hospital in Genoa, said: “Monkeypox is not serious and generally regresses within a few weeks. Symptoms are mainly fever, headache, and muscle and back pain. The professor also said that “infections have been found between men who have had intimate relationships with other men” but sexuality is not relevant. Infection, in fact, occurs by contact with body fluids, scabs of infected specimens, through the linen or close droplet.

The mortality rate is low, around 10%, yet the professor, interviewed on RadioRai1, invites us to raise our guard: “The novelty compared to the past is the human-to-human transmission. Past mistakes should not be made. We must all be united among European countries, exchanging information and monitoring any outbreaks. We cannot afford a new epidemic ”. Bassetti predicts that in the coming weeks there will be about a thousand cases in Europe, but he asks not to fall into psychosis with a rush to the smallpox vaccine.
