Apple Podcasts Subscriptions, Apple’s premium audio content arrives

by admin

The age of video is increasingly becoming the age of audio as well. The global success of Podcasts, audio “transmissions” in installments, is a reality on which all large companies are now keeping their ears open, even more so Apple which just fifteen years ago actually kicked off the Podcast phenomenon through iTunes (and podcasts themselves are named after the iPod, which at the time was the reference medium for this type of content, and the word broadcast). So during the Spring Loaded event, in which Apple presented new Macs and iPads, the announcement arrived: alongside the two million podcasts available for free on Apple platforms, Apple Podcasts Subscriptions will start from May, i.e. premium audio content, in 170 countries. Premium means paid but also with extra content and without advertising, and with previews and exclusives for listening reserved for subscribers.

The news will be seen from the iOS 14.5 operating system update, available for free. The Podcast app has been renewed to accommodate the new premium content and to optimize the use of podcasts more generally, the ability to save podcasts and a simplification of search and indexing by categories. In this sense comes the Smart Play function that will allow the listener to receive serial podcasts automatically and to keep the listening point reached updated. The introduction of channels is very interesting, that is a curation of contents created by creators, a sort of audio “digest” that offers an additional level of in-depth analysis.

For those who create content, Apple has created the Podcast Connect platform with the necessary guides for publication and the Podcasters Program site which contains, upon monthly subscription, all the tools necessary to manage the activity of creating audio content. The first year, Apple’s percentage of premium content will be 30%, and it will drop to 15% from the second year onwards.
