The University of Alicante is making significant progress in launching its new medicine career as construction work on the necessary infrastructure is now underway. Excavators have already started working on the land that will house the future facilities, including the anatomy classroom. This marks the final construction requirement needed for the new degree program to commence in September.

Unlike other academic disciplines, the new medicine program will utilize existing classrooms and laboratories available within the University of Alicante’s Faculty of Health Sciences. However, the addition of the anatomy classroom was deemed necessary for students to engage in dissection practices, an essential component of their studies. The university had estimated that the construction would take approximately six months, ensuring that the classroom will be available in time for the course to begin next February. The university assures students that the laboratories, classrooms, and faculty members required for the program are already in place and fully functional within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The budget for the construction of the new anatomy classroom, located near the College Hall, is set at 2.7 million euros. Initially, the university considered utilizing the Residence Hall for the anatomy classroom but ultimately decided that building a new facility from scratch would be more economically viable than refurbishing the old building. Once completed, the new facilities will cater not only to students studying medicine but also to those pursuing nursing, criminology, biology, biomedical engineering, and other already established university programs.

The new anatomy classroom will occupy an entire floor within the building. It will include separate rooms for the preparation of pieces and cadavers, bone libraries, and a space for anatomical studies. The project will also include amenities such as toilets, changing rooms, and teacher offices, as well as necessary infrastructure and urbanization components like sewerage, fiber optics, and side accesses.

The launch of the medicine program has not been without controversy. The Miguel Hernández de Elche University (UMH) has opposed its implementation, but the Superior Court of Justice rejected UMH’s request to temporarily halt the degree program. The court ruled that the University of Alicante’s decision to introduce the medicine degree did not harm the studies of the same degree at UMH. Despite these challenges, the University of Alicante has reassured prospective students that the course will begin as scheduled, and any legal issues raised by the UMH will be addressed. It is expected that the number of applications and details about admission requirements will be announced soon, with a quota of 86 students for the first course.

The University of Alicante’s commitment to expanding its academic offerings and providing quality education in the field of medicine remains steadfast. With the infrastructure development well underway, the institution is poised to welcome students to its new medicine career in September, delivering a comprehensive and modern learning experience to future medical professionals.
