Consumers Call for More Information on Animal Welfare Standards

Consumers in Spain are expressing concerns about the lack of information regarding animal welfare, according to a recent European survey conducted by the Organization for Consumer Protection (OCU). The survey found that while 7 out of 10 Spaniards believe animal welfare is important, 42% are not willing to pay more for food products that adhere to higher welfare standards.

The study also revealed that 97% of consumers in Spain regularly consume meat or fish, with 39% eating meat at least five days a week. However, when faced with potential price increases due to improved welfare standards, many consumers indicated they would seek alternative options such as purchasing cheaper meats like chicken or pork, opting for less noble cuts, or increasing consumption of legumes and vegetable-based meat substitutes.

Furthermore, the survey highlighted a lack of consumer knowledge about the conditions in which animals raised for consumption are kept. While labeling and packaging often provide information about the origin and production methods of food products, many consumers struggle to interpret these details accurately.

Consumers expressed a desire for greater transparency in labeling and better enforcement of welfare standards for all animal products, both domestically produced and imported. The majority of respondents agreed that new laws should be implemented to ensure the well-being of farm animals and that imported products should meet the same welfare standards as those within the European Union.

Ultimately, the survey reflects a growing awareness among consumers in Spain about the importance of animal welfare in food production and a call for more transparent and consistent standards across the industry.
