Controversy Surrounding Medical Education in Paraguay: The Battle Between the Paraguayan Circle of Physicians and Vice Minister Federico Mora

Trying to discredit the Paraguayan Circle of Physicians (CPM), Vice Minister Federico Mora attacked the president of the union, Jorge Rodas, by publishing a summary resolved more than ten years ago. This comes after the CPM called for Mora’s resignation due to the continuous authorization of medical careers without addressing concerns about their quality and lack of practice fields.

Since assuming office in December, Mora enabled an additional four medical degrees for private study houses and headquarters located in Pedro Juan Caballero, Hernandarias, and Capiatá, despite the outcry from the medical union. The CPM has been vocal about the proliferation of medical careers without ensuring the quality of education.

The tensions between the CPM and Mora escalated as discussions focused on the availability of practice spaces for students and residences in public hospitals. Renowned medical professionals joined the criticism, with Dr. Alfredo Boccia stating that faculties in Pedro Juan Caballero are controlled by drug traffickers.

Mora responded to the criticism by targeting Dr. Jorge Rodas on social media, referencing a past summary at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Asunción. Rodas clarified that the summary in question did not lead to his dismissal and reiterated the CPM’s commitment to highlighting issues in medical schools across the country.

The CPM president emphasized that the focus should remain on the quality of medical education in Paraguay and called for Mora to address the concerns raised by the union. Despite calls for his resignation, Mora stated that he will not step down but is considering measures to prevent the creation of additional medical faculties. The standoff between the CPM and Mora continues as both parties await further developments in the ongoing controversy.
