The German Caritas Association sees the traces of the corona pandemic as “deeply engraved in society”. Mental disorders in children and young people have doubled. “The pandemic had serious, including financial, consequences for many people,” said the Catholic association in Berlin on Wednesday.
“We have to deal with Corona constructively and critically,” said Eva Maria Welskop-Deffaa, President of the German Caritas Association. In addition to scientists, any planned study commission should also include those who have taken responsibility and found solutions in practice during the Corona period, she demanded.
The question of the proportionality of the Corona measures taken cannot be answered in general. Overall, however, they have contained the spread of the virus and protected vulnerable population groups. At the same time, they would have led to considerable burdens.
From today’s perspective, the initially strict ban on visiting relatives should have been gradually regulated differently, Caritas criticizes in retrospect. The school closures also went beyond what was necessary. “Children fell out of the sight of professionals in schools, daycare centers and leisure centers, and they received no help with problems in their families,” regrets the Catholic welfare association.

In order to survive crises like the pandemic, a tightly knit network of social infrastructure is necessary. “A crisis-resilient society needs buffer capacities in social institutions and services,” said Caritas President Welskop-Deffaa.
