“The wide distribution of new cases on the national territory indicates a reduced but persistent widespread circulation of the virus in our country“: this is what is reported in the extended document of the weekly ISS-Ministry of Health monitoring published on the ISS Epicentro website and updated on 7 July.
Most of the cases reported in Italy in the last two weeks were subjected to diagnostic assessment for the presence of symptoms (31.8%) or following contact tracing of cases ascertained with contact tracing, 29%. Local (autochthonous) transmission of the infection accounts for 76% of cases.
Most of the cases reported in Italy were identified in the last 14 days in unvaccinated subjects, who have not received any dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine or who were vaccinated with the first dose or single dose vaccine within 14 days of diagnosis, that is, before the time needed to develop a complete immune response to the vaccine.
In the over 80 age group, in the last 14 days, 35% of SARS-COV-2 diagnoses, 59% of hospitalizations, 78% of ICU admissions and 70% of deaths occurred among those who have not received any vaccine doses and represent 8% of the population in this age group.
As of July 7, 2021, approximately 91% of the over 80s in Italy had received at least one dose of vaccine and more than 88% had completed the vaccination course (two doses). Nineteen regions and autonomous provinces have achieved vaccination coverage of more than 80% in this age group.
