Indicators for the trend of Covid in Italy are all decreasing. The highest values for hospitalization and mortality concern those over 80.
In particular, according to the weekly ISS-Ministry of Health monitoring, as of 24 January the occupancy of beds in the medical area was 4.3% (2,691 hospitalised), a decrease compared to the previous week (6.0% on 17 January). The occupancy of intensive care beds also decreased, equal to 1.4% (121 hospitalized), compared to the previous week (1.9%).
Hospitalization and mortality rates are higher in the older age groups (hospitalization rates in the 80-89 and over 90 age groups respectively equal to 73 and 134 per 1,000,000 inhabitants and mortality rates in the 80-89 groups and over 90 respectively equal to 15 and 34 per 1,000,000 inhabitants); the rate of hospitalization in intensive care also increases with age (in the age groups 60-69, 70-79 and 80-89 equal to 2 per 1,000,000 inhabitants).
The transmissibility index (Rt) based on cases with hospitalization as of January 16th is below the epidemic threshold, equal to 0.60, decreasing compared to the previous week (Rt 0.65 as of January 9th). The incidence of Covid-19 cases in the period 18-24 January is 10 per 100,000 inhabitants, a decrease compared to the previous week (16 per 100,000 in the period 11-17 January). The new cases reported in the period 18-24 January are 5,810. The weekly incidence is decreasing in almost all Regions and Autonomous Provinces compared to the previous week. The highest incidence was reported in the Puglia region (20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Sicily (2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
On the variant front, as of 22 January, JN.1 (descendant of BA.2.86) currently represents the predominant variant, with a proportion equal to 70.5% in the last consolidated sampling week (01-07 January 2024).
