Twice a day, morning and evening, first chewing surfaces, then outer and inner surfaces – we have known since childhood how and when we should brush our teeth. But according to a London dentist, there are actually situations in which we shouldn’t brush our teethers.
In some situations it is advisable to wait before brushing your teeth
As Shaadi Manouchehri explains in a video on Instagram, this is the case immediately after breakfast. “When you have just eaten, the mouth is in a very acidic state. “So when you brush your teeth, you rub the acid onto the tooth, which is made of a mineral,” says the doctor. As a result, the acid can dissolve the mineral and thus wear down the tooth.
On the other hand, we should leave our toothbrush lying down after eating sweets. Finally, the bacteria in the mouth are digesting the sugar, forming acid. When you brush your teeth immediately, the acid is then rubbed onto the tooth, which destroys the tooth enamel, says Manouchehri. “Wait at least 60 minutes before brushing your teeth,” says the dentist.
After vomiting, rinse your mouth with just water
Even after we have vomited, it is better not to give in to the impulse to brush our teeth at first. After all, the stomach contents are “very acidic,” says the young doctor. If this gets into the mouth, the mouth is also put into an acidic state. “So if you brush your teeth right after, you’re essentially rubbing away your enamel,” says Manouchehri.
Do you have to deal with a bad taste in your mouth after vomiting? asks an Instagram user in surprise. The dentist says no: it is best to first rinse your mouth with water or use a mouthwash. After an hour you can brush your teeth.
