Together with 1. FC Union Berlin, DRF Luftrettung set an example for life today. The clear message of the #herzkicker campaign on March 23rd at the An der Alten Försterei stadium: Everyone can help, it’s very simple! More than 300 people accepted the invitation and took the opportunity to attend free training courses on lay resuscitation. In Germany, around 70,000 people suffer a sudden cardiac arrest every year. The patient’s chances of survival increase the sooner resuscitation measures are started: ideally before the emergency services arrive.

Dr. Jörg Braun, head of the medical department at DRF Luftrettung, and Oskar Kosche, managing director of 1. FC Union Berlin, opened the event. Both emphasized the importance of the campaign for the rapid and targeted care of people who suffer a cardiac arrest. “The brain is damaged just three minutes after this emergency occurs. That’s why life-saving measures by first responders are so important,” explains Dr. Jörg Braun.

“Check, call, push” – lay resuscitation can save lives

The resuscitation training courses, which were carried out by emergency paramedics and emergency doctors from DRF Luftrettung, were very well received. The courses provided basic information about resuscitation: the effects of cardiac arrest on important organs, the importance of lay resuscitation for the patient’s chances of survival and recovery and “check, call, push” as the most important measures for first responders. Immediately afterwards it was up to the participants to carry out and practice the resuscitation measures on mannequins. The response to the training courses offered was positive from all sides. “Our event today is a further building block in our broad commitment to resuscitation. It is important to train as many people as possible for these first aid measures and to convey to them that they can do nothing wrong – except do nothing. That is very good for us today succeeded,” explains Dr. Jörg Braun.

DRF Lufrettung has been supporting the “Save a life. 100pro reanimation” campaign of the German Foundation for Anesthesia, the German Society for Anesthesiology and the Professional Association of German Anesthesiologists since 2013 and takes part in the Bad Boller resuscitation discussions. DRF Luftrettung is a member of the German Resuscitation Council (GRC), which was founded in December 2007. The aim of the GRC is to support and harmonize interdisciplinary collaboration between organizations and individuals involved in the various aspects of resuscitation, and to promote lay resuscitation and student training in resuscitation.
