Fuji presents the X-H2s camera, a hybrid mirrorless camera for photos and videos

Fujifilm launched the new X-H2s professional cameratogether with some new X series lenses. The new mirrorless is a “Hybrid”, hence the H of the name, designed both for photographers – especially nature and sports – and for professionals in video shooting.

The Japanese company carries on this model a series of innovations that we will see later, in all probability, also on other models of the XT series. First of all, the sensor, which has the same 26 megapixel resolution as the X-H1 model four years ago, but is completely new. It is the X-Trans Cmos 5 HS, a stacked Aps-C, in which the pixel layer is directly superimposed on the signal reading “logic” circuitry. It is the first of its kind on a Fuji camera.

A new X-Processor is also added to the sensor fifth generation, which according to the company is about 30 times faster than the one mounted on the first model of the series, the X-H1. The X-H2s sensor-processor combination enables high-level performance. The car reaches bursts of 15 shots per second when using the mechanical shutter. With the electronic shutter, on the other hand, 40 frames per second can be reached. Shooting takes place without blackout in the electronic viewfinder and on the screen, thanks to pixel phase detection that does not interrupt the visual feedback of the scene.

As we have already seen for other models that focus everything on these characteristics (for example Nikon’s full-frame Z9, or the very recent Canon EOS R7), Fuji has also associated these shooting capabilities with a significant improvement in autofocus.

The new machine has a system of autofocus much faster than the previous model, which guarantees successful shots even when using the heaviest bursts. Moreover, thanks to the tracking system “trained” with artificial intelligence and the number of calculations performed by the processor every second, the X-H2s is able to recognize human subjects (faces, eyes, or body) but also animals, birds, motorcycles, cars and planes in every single frame.

Stabilization is on the machine body, with a 5-axis IS system that works up to 7 stops and is supported by a new automatic vibration detection function.

Video capabilities are also very advanced: X-H2s supports internal recording of 4: 2: 2 10-bit video at 6.2K / 30P and 4K / 120P. The sensor reading speed during video recording has been improved to 1/180 of a second, with a significant reduction of the “rolling shutter” effect (consequence of the progressive scan of the image on the sensor). The new camera is also compatible with three Apple ProRes Codecs: ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 LT. When recording in ProRes, X-H2S also supports proxy recording such as ProRes 422 Proxy, a feature that speeds up the editing process, very useful for video professionals. Finally, the F-Log2 function with expanded dynamic range up to 14+ stops has been added, allowing for a wider tonal gradation of the image.

Finally, the support for 10-bit Heif photo format, in addition to Jpeg and obviously RAW, and the presence of a CFexpress type B memory slot: it is essential for videos, because it enables internal recording of movies with the 422HQ or H.265 codec. On older models the recording of this type of video is usually referred to the recording on an external acquisition device connected to the machine.

X-H2s will arrive in Italy in July, at a recommended price of € 2,800 for the camera body only. Fuji has already announced, however, that a more distinctly photographic version will also be presented in September: it will be called X-H2 and instead of the current sensor it will have a new X-Trans CMOS 5 HR with 40MP resolution.
Together with the X-H2s, Fuji also presented two new lenses: the Fujinon XF150-600mm F5.6-8, a lightweight design zoom (2250 euros), and the Fujinon XF18-120, a very versatile fixed F4, designed in especially for all video shooting needs (1040 euros).
