Google buys a startup for smart glasses (and prepares for the metaverse)

Google has announced that it has bought a startup called Raxium, specialized in displays with micro LED technologywhich becomes part of its Device and Services division.

The most likely hypothesis is that Raxium helps Google to develop its projects in the metaverse, thanks to the creation of a pair of glasses based on the concept of augmented reality, successors of Google Glass but (hopefully for Big G) more successful. According to what has been explained, this startup produces “ultra-compact, low-power and high-resolution” displays, which can be used in a wide range of devices, especially wearable ones, to give back to the viewer vision quality higher without making the accessories too heavy.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Rick Osterloh, senior VP del reparto Devices & Services, confirmed online that “Google has acquired Raxium, an innovator in single-panel micro LED display technologies. The Raxium team has spent the past 5 years creating high resolution displays miniaturized, economical and efficient from an energy point of view, which lay the foundations for future visualization technologies “.

Before this official confirmation, a possible agreement between Google and Raxium had already been talked about in March, when The Information had pointed out the interest of the Mountain View company in wanting to internalize the production of key elements for upcoming devices addressed to the metaverse.
