Government Considers Implementation of Vocational Test for Future Medical Students

The Government considers the implementation of a vocational test at the EBAU to measure the human and ethical factors of future medical students. This proposal has been put forward by the Medical College Organization (OMC). The opposition party has asked the government about this proposal, and the response from Pedro Sánchez’s cabinet does not reject the creation of this test nor does it indicate that it is not being worked on.

The Executive emphasizes that the establishment of an extra exam like this could take place after passing the EBAU, within the universities themselves. The document emphasizes that admission to the university is made up of actions that award the places offered by Spanish universities, and these actions will take into account other assessments that universities may establish, such as a vocational test.

Some doctors and deans of Medicine view the implementation of this exam with caution. While some lean towards its implementation, others question whether it can be easily ‘cheated’. The president of the WTO, Tomás Cobo, stressed the need to measure attitudes such as “the time dedicated to social work” to ensure the entry of students with the most vocation for the profession.

There are concerns about the potential ‘dangers’ of an ‘extra’ vocational test, as exemplified by practices in other countries. Antonio Compañ, vice president of the National Conference of Deans of Medical Faculties, highlighted the need to avoid malpractices such as psychological interview preparation academies.

The possibility remains open for this proposal to come to fruition, either within the future Royal Decree on access to the university or as a tool for each medical school to carry out individually. While the government has not rejected the proposal, it remains to be seen how this will be implemented in the future.
