Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North studio and director of development department, answers questions
answer:After the game becomes a 3D environment, the entire immersive experience is changed, and the player is suddenly in the game world instead of in a bird’s-eye view. This has greatly changed our perspective on game production. We need a more meticulous world where players can have a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery and interact with other people and things at close range. This allows us to have different expectations for the movie effects and the degree of connection that the game can present, and it also allows us to discard some of the established elements of the game.
In order to achieve the results we want, we need a physics engine that allows the vehicle to have a closer connection with the game world and the various objects in it. We want players to be able to immerse themselves in the situation, trigger tasks in person, and let them talk to game characters as if they were talking to people in life or work. We want to give the game a height and let players experience it in this environment. Some of these elements can be found in 2D games, but the sense of distance and bird’s-eye view make these games much easier to make. After becoming 3D, we have to rethink how all these different parts fit together, because now the player is “in the game world” instead of just standing in a perspective that overlooks the whole world.
Challenges are almost everywhere. At that time, problems such as the third-person perspective and aiming system in the game had not been resolved, and then it was necessary to create a game world that met our expectations in terms of scale and details, and at the same time to allow the characters to be able to move smoothly. Free movement during this period can be said to be unprecedented. As a result, we have created a game world on an unprecedented scale, and it has also reached an astonishing degree of openness.
How to squeeze the game into the limited memory space? How to render a scene of several kilometers square? And how to enter and leave the vehicle in a 3D environment? What I am most proud of is that we made the game we wanted and achieved the best results we wanted. Of course, this is not easy. We set ourselves a lot of difficult challenges, and not only began to solve these problems, but also set ourselves a ambition-hope that we can make better games in the future.
answer:When we start to imagine how to immerse players in the game world, how they interact with the game world and the characters in it, this begins to reflect how the production team sees the whole world. After the player and vehicle experience deepens, we must improve other aspects of the game in order to achieve unprecedented realism. The music and sound effects team helped create this new space for players to be more immersive, and music and talk show radio stations took this gaming experience to a whole new level. Whether it’s playing existing music, such as the Double Clef FM radio station that exclusively broadcasts classical music, or the Flashback radio station that plays popular music in the 80s, or even writing songs for a specific station internally, GTAIII’s musical approach to this The game series was not only a turning point, but also allowed the team to continue to make progress in this area ever since.
We hope that these game worlds are fun in nature. Players can do nothing in the game, do not have to play the game according to a specific method, and want to experience any plot depends on their own wishes. So players can be themselves as much as they like. This kind of game world is full of choices and colorful. Players in it are as fun as solving tasks. In fact, the line between self-innovation and the “core game experience” has become blurred.
Although our ability to tell stories in these game worlds is getting better and better, we still hope that such a game world will allow players to go out of their own way and write their own stories. For example, players can drive around in a car while listening to music. Enjoy the sunset, and then immediately drew the gun and started a fierce firefight as soon as you arrived at the mission location. In other words, players can make the game what they want.
Can you really expect these things? I think you can feel that a certain work is good, but to have a huge impact all over the world, it takes the right time and place. We are very grateful that players love this game as much as I do.
I am proud of our team and the path we have adhered to. We are like laying the foundation, formulating rules, and blueprints. We created a game category so that others have a way to follow.
