Water is essential for the human body. Staying hydrated should be a top priority, especially in the summer. High temperatures lead us to sweat much more often and therefore dehydrate faster. We must, however, be careful. In fact, even drinking too much water could create problems in our body.
In particular, it could cause an imbalance in the number of electrolytes in our body. Electrolytes, including potassium, magnesium, and sodium, help regulate the functions of many organs. If we consume too much water, we may not have enough electrolytes that our body needs. There are several signs that may indicate that we are consuming too much water.
Headaches and confusion could be symptoms of this unexpected problem that could affect us especially in the summer
The first is the color of our urine. In fact, if we notice that this is transparent it is a sign that we may have consumed too much water and that we must limit ourselves. The ideal color is pale yellow, the color of lemonade. In this case, we are sufficiently hydrated. The second sign is that we often wake up during the night to go to the bathroom. In this case, however, we must remember that often going to the bathroom could be a symptom of other problems.
Drinking too much water could also cause blood sodium levels to drop. This could cause swelling in particular of the hands, feet and lips. In fact, the imbalance of this electrolyte causes fluid retention and swelling of the cells. This also predicts the brain and could lead to feeling confused or disoriented. Lack of sodium also causes headaches and nausea.
Not only headaches and confusion could be symptoms, but cramps and spasms as well. If our muscles are very weak we may have an over-hydration problem.
We listen to our body
Finally, we try to build on our natural thirst. We don’t drink large amounts of water when we don’t feel the need. This is because the body understands for itself when we need to naturally hydrate. We often consciously ignore it and that is why we don’t drink enough. Obviously, it is important to increase the amount of water when it is very hot or when we are exercising. If we seem to be constantly thirsty it could be a symptom of more serious problems.
If we think we are drinking too much water but want to be sure that we are hydrated enough, there are other ways. In fact, we can eat fruits and vegetables that contain a high percentage of water, replacing the liquid.
