In 2022 they are 625.282 i employees of the National Health Service, staff of local health authorities and public and similar hospitalization institutions (local health authorities, hospitals, university hospitals integrated with the NHS, hospitals integrated with universities). In 2020 they amounted to 617,466.

In particular, in 2022 they work for the National Health Service 101,827 doctors and dentists (there were 103,092 in 2020) e 268,013 nurses (264,686 in 2020). The ratio between nurses and doctors, at a national level, stands at 2.63 nurses for every doctor.

This is what we read in the monograph Personnel of ASLs and public and equivalent hospitalization institutions – Year 2022, edited by the Statistics Office – General Directorate of the digitalisation of the health information system and statistics.

In 2022, 69.5% of National Health Service staff are women, compared to 30.5% of men.

72.3% (451,871 employees) belong to the healthcare role, 17.8% to the technical role (analysts, statisticians, sociologists, social workers, etc.), 9.7% to the administrative role and 0.2% to the professional one (lawyers, engineers, architects, etc.).

With particular reference to the healthcare role, 59.3% are represented by nurses, 22.5% by doctors and dentists and 18.2% by other healthcare professional figures (healthcare profession managers, technical-healthcare personnel, rehabilitation function staff , supervision and inspection personnel).
