Emilia-Romagna Region Expands Free Vaccination Offer for Children, Young People, and Vulnerable Individuals

The Emilia-Romagna Region in Italy is taking further steps to protect the health of its citizens by enhancing the free vaccination program for children, young people, and vulnerable individuals. The new regional vaccination prevention plan for 2023-2025, approved by the council, is now being enforced and integrated with the national plan following evaluations from the regional vaccination technical group and vaccine commission.

Starting this year, free vaccinations against meningococcus B for adolescents and against the papilloma virus (HPV) for girls and boys up to 26 years old will be introduced. Additionally, individuals with specific pathological conditions will have access to booster vaccinations for anti-meningococcal B and ACWY vaccines, as well as vaccinations for herpes zoster (shingles).

The Department of Health Policies has distributed an updated operational guidance document to ensure consistent application of the vaccination plan throughout the region. The free offer of the meningococcal B vaccine is now available for adolescents born in 2011 and, upon request, those born in 2007. Free access is granted until the age of 18.

For HPV, the vaccine will remain free until the 26th birthday for females born in 1996 and now also for males born in 2006 who were not previously vaccinated. Free vaccinations are also extended to individuals at risk up to the age of 46, including men who have sex with other men, individuals engaged in prostitution, and those undergoing gender transition.

Lastly, free vaccination for herpes zoster is offered to 65-year-olds and individuals over 18 with specific pathologies. Other vaccinations for adults and children remain unchanged.
