(ANSA) – NAPLES, 27 SEPTEMBER – A heart transplant was performed on a small 11-month-old patient at the Monaldi hospital in Naples. The operation was carried out at the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Complex Operating Unit, directed by Dr. Guido Oppido, who performed the surgical procedure.
The little girl had developed a severe form of dilated myocardiopathy, probably arisen as a result of a Covid infection, contracted last February, which required hospitalization first and, in March, only 5 months old, for the persistence of severe heart failure, the implantation of a Berlin Heart, an artificial heart which acts as a pump external to the body and which receives blood through a cannula inserted in the left ventricle, introducing it into the bloodstream.
The mechanical assistance device of the club allowed the child to survive while waiting for the transplant, which took place thanks to a providential donation.
The transplant surgery was successful and had a regular operative and post-operative course.
The little girl, in fact, was transferred to the ordinary hospitalization ward and, soon, it will be possible to discharge her. (HANDLE).
