The two outbreaks
Well, what were the two most important clusters? According to experts from the Spanish Ministry of Health, basically two. The first had already been talked about in recent days and today El Pais reiterates it: the Gay pride held in Maspalomas, a town on the island of Gran Canaria, between 5 and 15 May. The Spanish newspaper writes: almost 80,000 people from all over Europe participated and it became one of the two outbreaks of the monkeypox epidemic in Spain, as confirmed by health sources. “The meeting was attended by some of the positive cases diagnosed in recent days in Madrid, two or three young Italians whose infection was confirmed in Rome and at least one case investigated on the island itself”. Still: “According to health sources, among the thirty diagnosed in Madrid, there are several who participated in the event, although it is not yet possible to know if one of them is patient zero of this outbreak or if they have all been infected there “.
The other large cluster is precisely in Madrid (a city also frequented by tourists from all over Europe, but also from other continents): the authorities of the comunidad have ordered the closure of a gay sauna in Madrid. “The outbreak is associated with a sauna,” announced the regional councilor for health, Enrique Ruiz Escudero the other day.
The conclusions
In summary: the monkeypix does not cause, in most cases, very serious symptoms, the transmission does not only affect certain sexual behaviors or only men, but at this stage in Europe it is concentrating mainly in the gay community, luckily it is not transmitted easily as Covid, but a good dose of caution is advisable. The epidemiologist Donato Greco, member of the CTS and consultant of the WHO explains: “We are careful about discrimination, but from the scientific point of view we must speak and explain things clearly in order not to generate unnecessary alarmism”.
