High Employment Numbers and Opportunities in the Field of Medicine for University Graduates

The Knowledge and Development Foundation (CYD Foundation) has released its report for 2023, highlighting the strong employment numbers for graduates with a degree in Medicine. The report indicates that one year after completing their degree at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) and passing the MIR tests, nearly 100% of graduates are employed. This degree is offered at the Albacete and Ciudad Real campuses of the university.

At a national level, the report reveals that 67% of new graduates in Medicine are women, surpassing the 63% average in the European Union. Additionally, the University of Castilla-La Mancha has more female doctors than male doctors.

The report also emphasizes that Medicine is among the careers with the highest salary, with graduates earning approximately 33,000 euros per year from their first year of employment. However, the degree is also highly competitive, with an average of 13 candidates vying for each position. The CYD Foundation suggests that the number of places in this degree could be expanded throughout Spain, as the growing population and increasing life expectancy will require more healthcare workers.

The report also identifies degrees with high rates of self-employment, with Optics and Optometry (92%) and Nursing (88.9%) being among the most utilized. Meanwhile, fields with the highest percentage of self-employed individuals include podiatry and dentistry, followed by speech therapy, nutrition, and physiotherapy.

Furthermore, the report highlights that the health field offers a “better fit” for university graduates, with a greater proportion of workers in this field included in the contribution groups of university graduates. Specifically, the fields of medicine, dentistry, nursing, opticians, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and podiatry, along with veterinary medicine, are well located in this regard.
