How long do opened mineral water bottles keep?

The opened bottle of mineral water has been standing by the bed for days. Just looking at it gives you a queasy feeling: Can I still drink from it? Consumer experts clarify.

After opening, mineral water bottles should be closed tightly and kept in a cool and dark place. Storage in the refrigerator is best, advises the Bavarian Consumer Advice Center. But the bottles shouldn’t be parked there forever either. Leftovers should be used within a few days.

According to consumer advocates, taste changes occur after a short time when the bottles are opened. The pH value of the water changes when it comes into contact with oxygen from the environment. It then tastes more sour and not as fresh, explains Anja Schwengel-Exner, nutrition expert at the consumer center.

Danger of germs if you drink directly from the bottle

But there is even danger lurking. If you drink your water directly from the bottle, germs and pathogens may also get into the water. At higher temperatures, these can multiply quickly. If the bottle is used by several people, this can also lead to the transmission of infections. The expert mentions herpes or cold viruses.

The situation is completely different with unopened mineral water bottles. They can be kept almost indefinitely, assure consumer advocates. Originally sealed bottles do have a best-before date, but the water can still be drunk long after this date, according to Schwengel-Exner. However, it is possible that, particularly in the case of plastic bottles, the taste changes due to a long storage period.
