Opinions vary widely as to when you should brush your teeth in the morning. The main question is whether you should clean them before or after breakfast.
Brush your teeth before or after breakfast? That’s better
Brushing your teeth is very important for good oral hygiene. Because this way your teeth not only stay white, but above all healthy. Be sure to brush your teeth in the evening after eating.
This means no bacteria stay in the oral cavity overnight. Things are a little different with breakfast – in the morning it is better to brush your teeth before eating. But why?
Acidic foods attack your teeth
Acidic foods like apples and oranges, which many people like for breakfast, attack tooth enamel. Another reason: If you reach for your toothbrush before eating, the toothpaste helps to better protect your teeth from acid attacks.
After eating acidic foods, you can rinse your mouth briefly with water. This flushes out the bacteria and slows down the effects of the acids.
Lots of bacteria form overnight
One more reason to reach for your toothbrush as soon as you get up in the morning: bacteria accumulate in the oral cavity overnight. If germs stay on your teeth for too long, plaque can form.
This can harden and attack the tooth enamel. Basically, the bacteria should be removed immediately by brushing your teeth in the morning, otherwise tooth decay can form and gum disease cannot be ruled out. Your teeth should be brushed before your first coffee.
An exception is breakfast. For other meals, it is better to brush your teeth afterwards. Dentists recommend waiting about an hour after eating. This gives the saliva time to reform – and the acids can be neutralized again.
