Newborn died of uterine rupture. Autopsy with 8 consultants: the girl was healthy

BELLUNO – The baby was healthyshe would die for the rupture of the mother’s uterus on the scar from previous cesarean section. These are the first responses fromautopsy carried out yesterday in the Pathological Anatomy Unit of Padua on the stillborn baby at the San Martino hospital in Belluno on 26 May last. It now remains to be clarified whether the uterine rupture could have been avoided, or whether it could have been intervened in time to prevent it from compromising childbirth. The certainties will only be available in 90 days: this is the time taken by the consultant appointed by the prosecution for the autopsy examination, the coroner Antonello Cirnelli of Portogruaro (Venice), supported by Professor Pantaleo Greco, director of Gynecology at the Sant’ Anna from Ferrara and Professor Marny Fedrigo, specialist in Pathological Anatomy at the University of Padua.

THE SUSPECTS
The investigation started following the complaint by the parents of the little girl last Monday. Prosecutor Simone Marcon has opened a file with the hypothesis of manslaughter in the health sector and at the moment there are three suspects: a gynecologist, Dr. Carlo Giuliano Zanni, 67 years old from Vicenza, defended by his lawyer Marco Dal Ben and two midwives, Maddalena Bez, 39 years old from Sedico defended by her trusted lawyer Ferdinando Coppa and Margherita Meneghin, 30 years old from Conegliano (TV) with her trusted lawyer Erminio Mazzucco. The defenses have appointed partisan consultants, who participated in the autopsy yesterday. For the gynecologist Giuliano Dr. Alberto Raimondo, coroner of Padua and Professor Giovanni Battista Nardelli, of the UOC of Gynecology of Padua. For Bez: Dr. Tiziano Maggino, former head physician of the Mestre gynecology hospital. It has reserved the right to appoint its consultant Margherita Meneghin. The offended party, with the lawyer Anna Casciarri, appointed Dr. Daniele Rodriguez, a specialist in forensic medicine and Professor Pietro Salvatore Litta, a specialist in Obstetrics and gynecology.

THE EXAM
After the hearing for the appointment that took place yesterday in the prosecutor’s office in Belluno, in front of the prosecutor Simone Marcon, the autopsy examination was carried out which took place in the afternoon in Padua. The 8 consultants were present. Dr. Cirnelli carried out the first investigations which brought out the picture already described: the birth was very healthy, the situation would have precipitated during the natural birth, due to the rupture of the mother’s uterus. The coroner acquired the medical records and all the health documentation and took the samples for the subsequent checks.

THE RECONSTRUCTION
According to what was reconstructed by the prosecutor’s office, the health team, the doctor and the two midwives insisted on natural childbirth. This despite the fact that the woman had already given birth previously, by cesarean. But in the delivery room something goes wrong and the woman has difficulty delivering her baby. In the end, the doctors must proceed to extract the child with a suction cup. But now it’s too late, the damage to mother and daughter is already there. They are irreparable for the unborn child, the newborn will come into the world dead. For the mother, the rupture of the uterus and bleeding right at the point of the scar from the previous cesarean delivery.
