A balanced diet in the first 1,000 days of life increases the chance that infants and very young children will develop well and remain healthy in the long term. The prevention program “Initial Happiness – Discovering Nutrition Together” strengthens community actors to provide competent support to (expectant) parents when it comes to nutrition. It therefore also meets the goals of the federal government’s new nutrition strategy. “Anfangsglück” is now starting as a pilot project in Berlin and Thuringia.

“With ‘Initial Happiness’ we want to create healthier eating environments for families,” explains Jelena Sörensen, prevention officer at the Association of Private Health Insurance (PKV). Participating family-oriented institutions in Berlin (Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Treptow-Köpenick districts) and in Thuringia (Kyffhäuserkreis and Wartburgkreis) receive, among other things, individual advice, e-learning and workshops through the program. The aim is to anchor sustainably effective nutritional offerings in the facilities; Parents should meet competent contact persons.

Studies show that many parents find it difficult to find their way in a jungle of sometimes contradictory nutritional information – and ultimately to implement findings in everyday life. “Employees in family centers and breastfeeding cafés, for example, can support this,” says “Anfangsglück” project manager Dorota Lazarski: “That’s why we want to strengthen them.”

The PKV Association is committed to living environment prevention with numerous programs. Health should take place where people spend important time in their lives: for example at school, in daycare, in district and family centers. The association implements “Initial Happiness” together with the Nutrition and Exercise Platform (peb) and DSPN (Your Strong Partner for Networks). The pilot projects are independently evaluated; The program will be rolled out in additional regions from 2025.

An episode of the PKV podcast “well-being” also deals with the relevance of healthy nutrition in small children:

The PKV Association is a member of the National Prevention Conference. Its prevention strategy covers the areas of nutritional and exercise health, psychosocial health, addiction and violence prevention, sexual health, digital settings, geriatric health and health literacy. Private health insurers invest around 22 million euros annually in this setting prevention, which they implement together with various program and project partners.
