Biotechnologist Cesar de la Fuente is making groundbreaking advancements in the field of antibiotic research, using computers and artificial intelligence to discover new antibiotics that combat resistant bacteria. His work, currently being developed at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, has earned him prestigious honors and recognition.

Infections caused by bacteria are a major threat, with antibiotic-resistant bacteria becoming increasingly problematic. Despite this, there is a scarcity of investment in finding a solution, and few research groups focus on this area. De la Fuente’s Machine Biology Group is at the forefront of this research, utilizing innovative methods to develop synthetic molecules that could lead to new antibiotics.

De la Fuente’s contributions to the field have been widely acknowledged, with accolades such as being named the best young researcher in the US in 2020 and receiving the Princess of Girona Foundation Award for Scientific Research in 2021. His work has also been recognized globally, as he is set to represent the United States in the Global Young Academy.

In an interview, De la Fuente emphasized the urgent need for investment in antibiotic research, as antibiotic-resistant infections continue to pose a serious threat to public health. He highlighted the importance of long-term planning and investment in science, citing the successful example of the rapid development of vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite being based in the US, De la Fuente fondly remembers his hometown of A Coruña, with its beautiful landscapes and delicious food. He emphasizes the need for Spain to invest more in science and innovation to drive economic growth and competitiveness on the global stage. His work shows the potential of science to address pressing challenges and pave the way for a healthier future.
