The Institute For Well-Being In Law to Host IWIL 2024 Conference
The Institute For Well-Being In Law (IWIL) will be hosting the IWIL 2024 Conference online on January 23, 24, and 25. The aim of this event is to provide knowledge and tools to help individuals in the legal profession function optimally in matters of well-being and mental health.
According to their website, the conference will offer four unique wellness topics, including individual, workplace, and law school wellness, as well as special sessions focused on wellness at the state and local level. The program includes engaging sessions, expert speakers, and valuable networking opportunities.
Mental health in the legal profession has been a frequent topic of discussion, as lawyers are often at a high risk of experiencing extreme tiredness and burnout. Research from LawCare, involving 1,700 legal professionals, revealed that 69% of respondents had suffered from a mental health problem in the previous 12 months, and 25% had experienced bullying, discrimination, or harassment in their workplaces.
Robert Chender, president of the Wellbeing Committee Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), emphasized the progress made in addressing mental health in the legal profession but stressed the need for further action, including addressing structural issues and promoting personal mental health within legal organizations.
In addition, Chender highlighted the importance of conferences in educating attendees on practical measures to promote mental health within the profession, particularly for those in management roles, emphasizing the need for them to champion mental health initiatives.
The event will feature Laurie Santos, a professor at Yale University and specialist in the “science of happiness,” as a keynote speaker, aiming to deliver knowledge on how to make wiser decisions and live a happier, more fulfilling life.
Other speakers at the conference will include Krista Larson, Shailini George, Francesca Acocella, Jon Krop, Rudir Krishtel, and Michael Kraut, each offering valuable insights based on their respective positions and roles within legal firms. The general price for the conference is US$325, with special prices available for law schools and students.
The event promises to be an insightful and informative gathering for legal professionals and stakeholders interested in promoting mental health and well-being within the legal profession.
