A study at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, showed this: Of the 9,000 test subjects, around 2,500 had consumed at least one pack of cigarettes every day for more than 20 years. When these heavy smokers quit, their risk of cardiovascular disease was reduced by almost 40 percent in the first five years of not smoking.
