Sony’s AI division has previously announced that it will work with Polyphony Digital, the developer of Gran Turismo 7, to create a “breakthrough AI project”, though details were not disclosed. Today’s “ground-breaking AI project” unveiled the mystery, which is the “Gran Turismo Sophy” jointly created by Sony’s AI department and Polyphony Digital, an AI racer with top-notch driving skills.
It’s not the first time AI has beaten humans, from chess to Go, but it now extends to highly realistic driving simulation games. Because in racing games, players need to consider and judge braking, route, speed, direction and other issues under the conditions of high-speed changes, as well as to play games with opponents, which also makes “Gran Turismo Sophy” compared to chess projects. AI players are more breakthrough. Sony says the “Gran Turismo Sophy” has a deep understanding of conquering challenging tracks through vehicle dynamics, racing circuits and precise maneuvering.
According to Sony, the project was launched in April 2020, and the “Gran Turismo Sophy” was trained through a virtual training ground established by 1,000 PlayStation 4 game consoles. In October of last year, “Gran Turismo Sophy” was able to take down top human racers in virtual racing competitions. Takuma Miyazono, who won three challenges in the FIA ”Gran Turismo 2020″ world finals, believes that AI can drive in ways humans would never have imagined, but in retrospect, it seems so reasonable.
At present, Sony has published the latest results in the journal “Nature”. Chris Gerdes, a professor at Stanford University who co-authored the article, said that this is a milestone achievement in the field of AI. In the future, “Gran Turismo Sophy” can also help in the field of autonomous driving.
