From 2012 to 2015 he served as Deputy General Manager of DG CONNECT. In the past Viola was Chairman of the European Radio Spectrum Policy group (RSPG), member of the BEREC Board (Body of European Telecom Regulators) and Chairman of the European Regulatory Group (ERG). From 2005 to 2012 he also held the role of Secretary General at AGCOM. Previously, from 1985 to 1999, he worked at ESA, the European Space Agency.
