Sexually transmitted diseases on the rise among young people, especially boys

CIVITAVECCHIA – The number of sexually transmitted diseases among young and very young people is on the rise, with boys being the most affected. According to data collected by consultants of the local health company in recent years, these alarming trends are in line with statistics provided by the World Health Organization.

Alessandro Onofri, a medical specialist in endocrinology and andrology at ASL Roma 4, highlighted the concerning increase in cases. “The WHO reports that there are 1 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections worldwide every day, indicating a significant rise,” said Onofri. “In Italy, there have been more than 150 thousand cases of sexually transmitted diseases from 1991 to 2021, with an 80% increase since 2005, primarily affecting males with an average age of 33.”

While HIV is often associated with sexual diseases, there are over 30 pathogens that can be transmitted through sexual activities. Onofri emphasized the need for awareness about other common infections such as herpes, HPV, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis, and Gonorrhea. He also mentioned the importance of educating young people about the risks of unprotected sex and the importance of using condoms.

The consultants are actively working on providing information and prevention strategies, focusing on educating young people who are more vulnerable to these diseases due to various factors. Onofri stressed the importance of early detection and intervention, as many young people may not be aware of their illnesses until symptoms become severe.

To address these challenges, the clinic is conducting educational sessions in schools and raising awareness about the role of andrologists in addressing sexual health issues. Despite the increase in sexually transmitted diseases among young people, only a small percentage undergo routine andrological check-ups.

For those interested in scheduling a consultation or seeking more information, the clinic is open on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 13. Appointments can be made by calling 0696669126.
