The bacterial strain isolated in the Arbus patient affected by cholera, a 71-year-old man, does not belong to the types responsible for most cholera epidemics.
The confirmation arrived today from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in the offices of the regional councilor where the negativity of the sample to strains 01 and 0139 was communicated. The conditions of the elderly man, hospitalized in isolation at the Santissima Trinità hospital in Cagliari after assessment of the diagnosis, are continuously improving. Furthermore, from the checks carried out, none of the patient’s family members were infected.
The health councilor Carlo Doria underlines the timeliness and competence demonstrated by the public health services of the Cagliari and Medio Campidano local health authorities: “all the investigations – explains Doria – were carried out scrupulously and the monitoring was done without ever underestimating anything , until the identification of the pathogen by the Aou of Cagliari”.
