The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the US government agency that deals with the regulation of food and pharmaceutical products, has said it wants to require tobacco companies to reduce the amount of nicotine in traditional cigarettes, to make them create less addiction and limit the damage to health caused by smoking. There aren’t many details yet on the kind of regulations the FDA would like to pass, but a first proposal is expected to be presented in May 2023, according to a government announcement.
If the proposal were to be approved, the United States would become the only country together with New Zealand to have implemented measures of this type: but it could take years, also due to the opposition they will almost certainly encounter from tobacco companies.
