The president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, responded to a question raised by Unidas Podemos deputy Cristina Gómez regarding the number of internists at the Mateu Orfila Hospital. Prohens defended that the number of internists at the hospital is sufficient, stating that out of the ten internal medicine positions available, seven are adequately equipped. She mentioned that one position is covered by a family doctor, another is awaiting degree approval, and the last is vacant due to sick leave.
Despite reports from professionals at the hospital indicating otherwise, Prohens assured that the service has been guaranteed at all times, with doctors from other specialties covering shifts. She cited a reduction in the waiting list for consultations with internists at the hospital as evidence of this.
Gómez disputed Prohens’ claims, stating that the president was poorly informed and referenced concerns raised by department professionals in “Es Diari” about the potential harm to patient service due to the lack of human resources. Gómez also mentioned the inability to cover guards with specialists, citing a letter from the head of the department, Jordi Guerrero.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop at the Mateu Orfila Hospital and whether the concerns raised by professionals will be addressed.
