“The vaccine? Here’s who it’s recommended for.”

The Higher Institute of Health in Italy has recently reported a total of 117 cases of Dengue from January 1 to April 8, 2024, all of which were associated with foreign trips. This number is significantly lower than the cases reported last year, which were less than 400, with only a few being native cases. It is important to note that the mosquito season is starting, and there is a risk of imported cases leading to internal outbreaks.

According to Matteo Bassetti, head of infectious diseases at San Martino in Genoa, the beginning of the mosquito season means that it is crucial to be vigilant in preventing the spread of Dengue within Italy. The Ministry of Health recommends taking local actions with larvicides during these strategic months to prevent further cases.

The Dengue map of cases in Italy shows that Veneto is currently at the top with 24 cases, followed by Lazio with 23 and Lombardy with 21. Tuscany has 13 cases, followed closely by Emilia Romagna with 12 cases. The average age of those infected is 42 years, with 50% being male, but no deaths have been reported.

When it comes to protecting oneself from the Dengue virus, Bassetti recommends that people who travel to endemic areas for extended periods or those who have had a previous infection should consider getting the vaccine. For others, the focus should be on prevention, such as using mosquito nets and repellents.

As the mosquito season progresses, it is important for individuals to take necessary precautions to avoid the spread of Dengue within the country. Stay informed and take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your community from this potentially dangerous virus.
