Tiger Mosquitoes Pose Threat of Dengue Fever in Monferrato Region
Residents in the Monferrato region are on high alert as tiger mosquitoes have been identified as capable of wintering in homes and reappearing when temperatures rise. These insects, known for their distinctive striped appearance, are potential vectors of Dengue fever, a viral illness transmitted through mosquito bites.
Dengue fever, which can cause symptoms such as migraines, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and high fever, is a concern in the region due to the frequency of travel to countries where the virus is present, particularly in Latin America. While the virus is not transmissible from person to person, infected mosquitoes can spread it to others through their bites.
The regional health department has implemented precautions to prevent the spread of Dengue fever, including quarantine measures for identified cases and adulticidal treatments in affected areas. Additionally, a mosquito control campaign is set to begin in the Casale area next week to target tiger mosquitoes and prevent potential outbreaks of the virus.
Entomologist Luca Balbo advises residents to take preventive measures against mosquito bites, such as wearing protective clothing and eliminating standing water sources where mosquitoes can breed. By following these guidelines, individuals can help reduce the risk of Dengue fever and protect their health during mosquito season.
