“To the gym on foot and in unsuitable spaces”

Students at Wiligelmo scientific high school are facing a challenging situation as they are forced to walk almost two kilometers to and from the gym for their Sports Science classes. This inconvenience has arisen due to the suspension of bus services by aMo (Agency for Mobility and public transport of Modena) on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and on Wednesday from 8 to 10.

The Wiligelmo Parents Committee has taken action by addressing a letter to the Province of Modena and municipal institutions to seek a resolution to this issue. According to the parents’ representative, Antonella Sterni, students at the scientific high school are only able to use the nearby gym when students from another school are not present, leading to overcrowding and scheduling conflicts.

As a result of the reduced transportation services, many students are having to make the lengthy journey on foot, particularly impacting their time in Physical Education classes. Sterni highlighted the added complexity of this situation when it rains, expressing concern that students are being deprived of a significant portion of their physical education time.

The parents’ spokesperson also raised concerns about the suitability of the available gym spaces for Sports Science lessons, noting that some environments are primarily designed for martial arts. The lack of suitable spaces and transportation options has prompted a clear and direct request from the Wiligelmo community for immediate transportation solutions to the ‘Corassori’ gym, as well as long-term efforts to secure an adequate space for the school.

In response, the Province has stated that discussions are underway to optimize the use of spaces for both Wiligelmo and another school, Guarini. The Province also acknowledged the challenges related to transportation, citing economic and logistical considerations within the broader educational framework. However, they have expressed a commitment to minimizing the inconvenience for affected students.

The situation at Wiligelmo highlights the importance of reliable transportation and suitable facilities for students’ education and well-being. As discussions continue, the hope is that a timely and effective solution will be reached to address the current challenges faced by the students.
