Tricks to clean freshly made pierced ears

Did you just pierce your ears and don’t know how to clean them well? Don’t worry, with these little tricks you will succeed in no time, preventing itching, redness and nasty infections!

Earrings are a must have for many of us! They are essential accessories, perfect to complete any look, from the most elegant and refined to the most casual and jaunty.

There are many types of earrings on the market: in gold or silver, costume jewelery, made with recycled materials and, even, made of plexiglass or paper. However, almost all of them can only be worn if you have pierced ears. So let’s talk about the piercing of the earlobes, which is often done at an early age.

Piercing the ears is a fairly simple operation. The important thing is that you operate in conditions of maximum hygiene. The piercing gun must be sterile, even better if disposable. We must rely on serious professionals, who know how to intervene promptly if something should go wrong. That’s why DIY is to be avoided!

What you have to do at home, however, is to clean the holes well, in the hours and days following the drilling. Here are the tips to follow to do it well, preventing redness, itching, infections and allergies (including those to nickel).

For the piercing of the earlobes you can contact a specialized pharmacy. On average, the cost is 5 euros, to which is then added that of the earrings you choose. Almost always, before proceeding, the signing of an informed consent is required (for minors, the signature of both parents is required).

The pharmacist who will perform the piercing must be informed, preventively, on any existing health problems (diabetes, heart disease, immune deficiencies) and on specific pharmacological therapies (for example anticoagulants). These are factors that may reduce the ability to fight infections.

Already in the pharmacy, immediately after the puncture, the holes are cleaned correctly. But it must also be done at home, in the following days, to avoid the onset of annoying infections. If you have recently made the holes, here are the steps to follow to disinfect them well.

• Get sterile gauze – Soaked in a disinfectant solution, possibly without alcohol. We recommend hydrogen peroxide. Thoroughly clean the hole and all the surrounding area.
• Repeat this at least twice a day – Preferably morning and evening. You need to get rid of any secretions until the wound has healed.
• Keep the ‘trial earrings’ for as long as necessary – They should never be removed before 15-20 days, to allow the wound to heal completely, without an allergic reaction occurring.

These are the basic rules for proper hygiene, also recommended by pharmacists. However, there are also some grandma’s remnants that work well. If the holes made recently itch, are red or give off a bad smell, you can try using a solution based on water and sea salt (or physiological), to be applied 2-3 times a day on the affected areas with a cotton ball .

Another trick is to apply a little saliva on an empty stomach in the morning on the healing holes. According to many, the remedy really works, with good results already after a couple of applications. Science has long proven that saliva has healing properties and accelerates the healing process of wounds.

With these little tricks you can heal your lobes in no time. You have to be constant with disinfection and, above all, do not rush to take off the ‘test earrings’.
