Two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech’s Covid vaccine (BNT162b2) are 90% effective against Covid-19 hospitalizations for all variants, including Delta, for at least six months. This is confirmed by a new study by Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) health system and Pfizer published in the journal The Lancet.
The study notes that efficacy against all SARS-COV-2 infections decreased over the study period, from 88% within one month after receiving two doses of the vaccine to 47% after six months. However, the researchers point out, “the efficacy against hospitalizations remained at 90% overall and for all variants”.

These findings, the study reads, are consistent with preliminary reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Israeli Ministry of Health, which found reductions in the efficacy of the BNT162b2 vaccine against infection after about six months. The researchers say this study underscores the importance of improving vaccination rates around the world and monitoring vaccine efficacy to determine which population groups should be prioritized to receive boosters. Furthermore, in a specific analysis, the researchers found that the reductions in vaccine efficacy against Covid-19 infections over time are likely due to the decline, and not the delta variant escaping vaccine protection.
