Italy Shines a Light on Endometriosis Awareness
In Italy, there are at least three million women who have been diagnosed with endometriosis, a chronic disease that often goes undiagnosed, leading to physical and psychological suffering, as well as infertility. The diagnostic delay for endometriosis ranges from 5 to 8 years on average, making it essential for women to be aware of the symptoms and seek early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Endometriosis is a condition where the endometrial tissue, which typically lines the uterus, grows outside of the uterus in abnormal locations such as the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, bladder, and intestine. This tissue thickens and sheds each month, causing pain and other symptoms. Common symptoms of endometriosis include pelvic pain, menstrual irregularities, intestinal disorders, and infertility.
World Endometriosis Day, observed on March 28, aims to raise awareness about this condition that affects 10-15% of women of reproductive age, with a peak between 25 and 35 years old. To mark the day, various initiatives have been organized across the country, including free gynecological visits in hospitals. Monuments, squares, and government buildings, including the Ministry of Health, the Senate, and the Chamber of Deputies, will light up yellow, the symbolic color of endometriosis.
It is important for women to know that menstrual pain and pain during intercourse are not normal and should be discussed with a doctor. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help prevent the physical and emotional toll of endometriosis, as well as infertility. Different types of treatments are available depending on the symptoms and stage of the disease, including medical therapy, surgical therapy, and periodic monitoring.
For women with advanced stages of endometriosis, there are protections in place that entitle them to free services without paying the ticket fee. Since 2017, endometriosis at advanced clinical stages has been included in the essential levels of assistance, covering chronic and disabling diseases. Women can request exemption from their local health authority by presenting a certificate from a public hospital or outpatient facility confirming the stage of the disease.
By shedding light on endometriosis and promoting awareness and early diagnosis, Italy is taking steps to support women living with this chronic condition and reduce the impact it has on their lives and fertility.
