16-year-old died in South Tyrol in an avalanche, closures in the Aosta Valley

There was another fatal avalanche in South Tyrol: A 16-year-old skier was hit by an avalanche off the piste in the Pfelderer Valley on Sunday afternoon and killed. The local had been traveling alone. Because there was additional fog and darkness was falling, the buried victim was only discovered hours later, South Tyrolean media reported. The emergency doctor could only determine that the teenager was dead. A large contingent of emergency services was involved in the search.

Avalanche warning level 3 was in effect in the relevant area on Sunday. Shortly after the person who later died in the accident had used the mountain railway to the Karjoch, it was closed, as were the slopes, due to poor conditions.

Barriers in the Aosta Valley

In northwest Italy, a side valley of the Aosta Valley is cut off from the outside world after an avalanche: A huge avalanche occurred on Monday night and, among other things, buried the Val di Rhemes regional road. According to the Ansa news agency, the mountain community of Rhêmes-Notre-Dame is currently isolated. The community has around 80 residents, plus tourists.

Because of the danger of avalanches in the Aosta Valley, the upper Gressoney Valley has also been isolated since yesterday. According to the report, almost 4,500 people are staying there. Here too, an avalanche had broken out and blocked a road tunnel. The communities of Gaby and Cogne are affected. For safety reasons, the regional road was closed.
