A 65-year-old man, an Italian citizen residing in the Argento area, was stopped by the Ferrara Carabinieri, directed by the Este Public Prosecutor’s Office because he was “suspected of a crime” following the theft of two machine guns, 180 bullets and two ‘Tonfa’ sticks , kept on board a Carabinieri vehicle, which occurred last February 26 in San Nicolò di Argenta while the soldiers were busy with a dispute between spouses inside a house.

The crimes charged to the 65-year-old are those of multiple aggravated theft and possession of weapons and ammunition of war. Part of the stolen goods were found on the morning of the 27th in a canal in the surrounding countryside. To locate the missing material – a machine gun and 180 bullets – and find the perpetrator of the theft, around 800 soldiers from the Ferrara Provincial Command, the ROS Anti-Crime Department, the Genoa Diving Unit, the Dog Unit and of the Bologna Forestry Group. They were joined by around 150 men from the Fire Brigade and the Civil Protection Unit of the National Carabinieri Association of Ferrara. 172 abandoned farmhouses and warehouses were searched and over 20 waterways dredged, in a total area of ​​approximately 22 square kilometers. More than 39 searches were also carried out throughout the province of Ferrara and, in particular, in the Argentano area.

The investigations have made it possible to tighten the circle around a local criminal, already known to the Carabinieri, arrested today as a “suspect of a crime” after a search of his home and taken to prison. Investigations into the material not yet found are still underway.
